Shen Yueyue, Vice-Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), led a team that conducted legislative research on the revision of the Law on Protection of Women's Rights and Interests in Shanghai from June 22 to 24.
Shen stressed studying and implementing Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and Xi Jinping Thought on the Rule of Law, and improving the system of protection of women's rights and interests in accordance with the current stage of China's economic and social development.
During their research, the team organized a symposium on the revision of the law to hear comments and suggestions of the Standing Committee of the Shanghai Municipal People's Congress, the Shanghai Municipal Government and relevant government departments.
The team also visited a university, a village, a residential community, a women and children's home, a science and technology zone, an aid station and an urban construction planning exhibition hall to hear comments and suggestions of local residents, women teachers and college students, women representatives from business circles and scientific and technological circles, and the staff of women's federations at all levels.
Shen praised the efforts and achievements that have been made to strengthen the protection of women's rights and interests in Shanghai. She said the NPC Standing Committee has resolutely implemented the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping's speech on strengthening women's work and safeguarding women's legitimate rights and interests, actively responded to women's expectations and social concerns, and included the amendment of the Law on the Protection of Women's Rights and Interests in the legislative work plan for 2021.
Shen pointed out that adjustments to the law include all aspects of social life, covering issues in the areas of politics, economics, ethics and society. She called for adhering to a people-centered and problem-oriented approach, further optimizing the design of the basic system for promoting gender equality, and addressing the most pressing and immediate issues that concern women the most.
Shen added that the revision of the law should respond to the new expectations of the people, meet the new yearning of women for a better life, and further enhance women's sense of gain, happiness and security in order to raise women's causes in China to a new level.
